What changed
Time to bail on Atlassian Cloud Automation and usage meters? Act. You can stay. Billing for most usage meters starts December 3, 2026, and extra usage is on by default. Set caps first.
On our scale this is Act: change a setting or plan before the date. You can stay.
From December 3, 2026, Atlassian Cloud bills for use past your plan, like rule steps. This is on by default. Enterprise plans lose unlimited rule runs.
Here are the facts we checked:
- Billing begins for most meters: December 3, 2026 (Atlassian)
- Exact timing: Can depend on the capability and your billing cadence (Atlassian)
- Extra usage: Enabled by default; usage goes on past your included allowance (Atlassian)
- Enterprise plans: No longer have unlimited automation; they get pooled allowances (Atlassian)
- Extra Automation steps: $0.50 per 1,000 steps, or prepaid step packs (Atlassian)
- If extra usage is off and the allowance runs out: New automation flows stop; events are not queued (Atlassian)
- How to cap it: Atlassian Administration > Billing > pick a meter > disable extra usage, or set a usage limit (Atlassian)
- Cloud orgs that go past their allowance: Pay for extra usage from December 3, 2026 unless an admin turns it off (Atlassian)
You can stay on Atlassian Cloud. You have to change a setting or plan before the date.
Leaving is a choice here, not a must.

Who is affected
Cloud orgs that go past their allowance: Pay for extra usage from December 3, 2026 unless an admin turns it off.
The date to remember is December 3, 2026. Make the change before then.
What to do before December 3
- Look at your usage. Open the Platform usage dashboard in Atlassian Administration under Insights. Note which meters are near the allowance.
- Set a limit on each meter. In Billing, pick a meter. Turn off extra usage, or keep it on with a usage limit.
- Trim heavy automation rules. Each part of a rule that runs counts as steps. Fix rules that run too often before December 3.
A few tips:
- Make the change yourself before the date. Do not wait for the last reminder email.
- Write down your current plan or settings first, so you can compare after the change.
- After the change, open your settings again and check that it worked.
